Chapter 5: Interesting Facts About Abu Ubaidah

1. Known as Al-Amin

The Prophet Muhammad bestowed upon Abu Ubaidah ibn Jarrah the title Al-Amin, meaning “The Trustworthy.” This title was a testament to his honesty, integrity, and unwavering loyalty, which he displayed in every aspect of his life.

2. Blessed with a Miraculous Event

One extraordinary event that showcased Allah’s blessings and assistance for Abu Ubaidah occurred when the Muslim army under his command ran out of food supplies. In this dire situation, Allah provided them with a miraculous giant fish known as ambar. The fish washed ashore on the Red Sea coast.

The fish was so enormous that it sufficed to feed 300 Muslim soldiers for an entire month. To illustrate the size of the fish, Abu Ubaidah instructed thirteen men to sit in the hollow of its eye socket. He also ordered the retrieval of two large bones from the fish, which were then erected like poles. A tall soldier mounted on the largest camel walked underneath the bones without his head touching the top.

During their time at the site, the bones of the giant fish served as shelter from the scorching sun. This miraculous event stood as undeniable proof of Allah’s aid for those who have faith and remain patient.

3. A Humble and Respected Leader

As the governor of the Levant and the supreme commander of the Muslim forces, Abu Ubaidah was renowned for his simplicity, justice, and prioritization of the people's welfare over his own. Neither power nor wealth ever altered his modest lifestyle.

4. Guaranteed Entry into Paradise

Abu Ubaidah ibn Jarrah was one of the ten companions who were guaranteed entry into Paradise by the Prophet Muhammad . This honor was bestowed upon him due to his strong faith, loyalty, and sacrifices in advancing the cause of Islam.

In 639 CE, the Levant was struck by a devastating plague known as the Amwas Plague. This outbreak caused immense suffering among the local population. At the time, Abu Ubaidah ibn Jarrah served as the governor of the Levant. Caliph Umar ibn Khattab offered him the opportunity to leave the region for his safety. However, with remarkable compassion and courage, Abu Ubaidah declined the offer, saying, "I do not wish to abandon the fate that Allah has decreed for me alongside my people."

In an act of great sacrifice, Abu Ubaidah chose to remain among his people, who were struggling against the plague. He not only provided guidance and encouragement but also continuously prayed for the well-being of the Ummah. Despite knowing the great risks involved, he continued to fulfill his responsibilities as a faithful leader to his people. His sincerity and sacrifice made him an extraordinary role model for Muslims worldwide.

When the time came for Abu Ubaidah to pass away, he imparted wise counsel to his troops. He said: "I advise you to fear Allah, maintain your prayers, fast, give charity, and obey a just leader." This advice reflected his life of trustworthiness, simplicity, and selfless service to the Muslim community.

After Abu Ubaidah's passing, Caliph Umar ibn Khattab expressed profound grief. With a heavy heart, he said: "If Abu Ubaidah were alive, I would have appointed him as my successor without hesitation." This statement illustrated the immense respect and trust that Umar had for Abu Ubaidah, a leader characterized by honesty, integrity, and justice. Umar firmly believed that if Abu Ubaidah had lived longer, he would have been the ideal candidate to lead the Muslim Ummah.

Today, Abu Ubaidah’s grave is located in Deir Alla, a small village in Jordan that was once part of the Levant. His burial site has become a place of pilgrimage for Muslims who wish to honor his contributions and sacrifices as one of the greatest heroes in Islamic history. His courage, exemplary conduct, and steadfastness in fulfilling the trust entrusted to him by the Ummah remain an enduring legacy, inspiring future generations to uphold the principles of goodness and justice in their lives.
